Das Jahr 1963 gibt uns Anlaß, den Blick dankbaren und frohen Herzen auf das Werk zu richten, dan die Missionare der Gesellschaft des Göttlichen Wortes seit 1913 in 50jähriger Arbeit auf den Inseln von Nusa Tenggara geleistet haben. Der Erfolg ihrer Arbeit ist offenkunding: die rund 800.000 Katholiken ihres Gebietes bilden mehr als 60% aller Katholiken Indonesiens. Von dem Werden und Wachsen dieser Missionkirche soll das vorliegende Buch berichten.

Ziel der europäischen und amerikanischen Missionare war es, das Wort des heligen Paulus an Titus zu erfüllen: “Ich habe dich auf Kreta zurückgelassen, damit di die Ordnung (der Kirche) vollendest und in jeder stadt Presbyter einsetzest” (Tit 1,5). Mit dankbarkeit gegen Gott, der alles Gute in uns wirk, dürfen wir heute auf eine blühende einheimische Kirche blicken: Zwei Bischöfe, 72 Priester, 47 Brüder, 170 Schwestern hat Gott schon aus unserem Volke berufen, 4000 katholische Lehrer, 3000 Katechisten, 70 Krankenpflegerinnen stehen ihnen als Kerntruppe des Laienapostolates zur seite.

Das rasche Wachstum der Kirche in Nusa Tenggara darf sich stützen auf die offene Bereitschaft der Menschen dieser Inseln, die Botschaft Christi aufzunehmen, es bkiebe jedoch unerklärlich ohne die unermüdliche Arbeit der Wohltäter in den christlichen Ländern Europas und Amerikas. Allen, denen Gott die Gnade schenkte, durch Arbeit, Gebet und Opfer am Missionwerk in Nusa Tenggara mitzuwirk, sagen wir im Namen unseres Volkes ein Wort tiefen Dankes.
