Pacita Abad, a Filipino artist
who has worked in Indonesia for saveral years, ia part of this stream of
development. In 1985, after a number of explorations to find an appropriete
idiom, she arrived at the technique she calls “trapunto” painting (from the Italian,
trapungere, to sew and stuff).
“More recently, I was shown some
beautiful ikat weaving from Sumba. I was attracted by the strong earth colors,
the bold design and the stark figures used in the ikat weaving. When I went to
Sumba earlier this year I was surprised because, although I knew about the
weaving, I never imagined high peaked, thatched roofs and beautiful funerary
stones. After spending some days visiting vilages around Waikabubak and hearing
the stories of the old people, I was inspired to do my last work.”
