It is now more than two
decades since the first major military operation against East Timor by Indonesian
forces. That assault, on the border village of Balibo on 16 October 1975, in
which five newsmen from Australia died, brought East Timor into the
international spotlight. The events surroundings the Indonesian invasion of
East Timor and the subsequent integration of the former Portuguese colony into
Indonesia have long been shrouded in confusion. The united Nations is yet to
take firm action on the issue, in contrast to situations in Kuawait and Bosnia
which attracted swift and positive responses.
