On 17th July, 1976, East Timor became the 27th
province of the Republic of Indonesia, because the majority of the people of
that region wanted integration with the republic. Before that, part of the
island of Timor had been under Portuguese rule 450 years.
This book makes very interesting reading for those who are not yet
acquainted with this youngest province of Indonesia and its people and culture.
It sketches, in brief, the arrival of colonialist Portugal in Timor and
surroundings, followed by the exchange of territory plus a sum of money between
Portugal and the Dutch, who colonialized Indonesia in 1851.
It continues with the struggle of the people for integration with Indonesia,
followed by armed opposition from the little group of East Timorese, Fretilin,
who wanted East Timor to be an independent state. Due to the latter, a number
of nations still do not recognize the integration with Indonesia.
However, the facts prove that the East Timor people lead a much better
and prosperous existence now, compared to the situation when the Portuguese
left and prior to integration with the Republic of Indonesia.
And now, what next? Read this book!
