The massacre of an as yet
undetermined number of unarmed civilians in Dili on 12 November 1991 was only
latest in a series of massacres which have been carried out by the Indonesian
army since the 1975 invasion. Indonesia’s 16-year occupation of East Timor has
resulted in the death of 200,000 people by war, famine and repression.
One-third of a whole people perished in a genocide comparable with Pol Pot’s in
Cambodia.
Yet the West, including Australia,
accepted Indonesia’s illegal annexation of East Timor almost without protest.
And successive Australian governments –Whitlam’s, Fraser’s Hawke’s and
Keating’s- encouraged, accepted and recognized Indonesia’s annexation of East
Timor. Even after the Dili massacre, Australia signed a further treaty giving
BHP and other oil companies a share in exploiting Timor Gap oil and gas.
Mark Aarons and Robert Domm have
written a damning indictment of the Indonesia’s and their policies which will
remind all Australians of the continuing tragedy going on just off our coast; a
tragedy we helped to created.
