From
Rote, a tiny island that hardly appears on the world map, Adrianus Mooy began
his life journey, a life full of unexpected twists and turns. He is a rare
person, who has never applied for a job but has been applied for by jobs! Even
the Secretary General of the United Nations requested him to take up the
position of Under-Secretary-General/Executive Secretary of UN-ESCAP in Bangkok.
This was after he had served as one of the principal drafters of Repelita at
Bappenas, served for five years as Govenor of Bank Indonesia as well as being
Indonesia’s Ambassador to the European Community based in Brussels. He feels
himself to have been blessed in life, including in the beautiful girl whom he
met in his student days, and who later became his beloved wife.
There
are two epidodes in his life that he can never forget. The first was when God
arranged it in such a way that he could not finish his Ph.D. program in the
United States before 1965. If he had finished the doctoral degree program
before 1965 and returned directly to Jogjakarta, he might have fallen victim to
the G30S Communist coup attempt, as did some of this colleagues, who had
returned earlier to Gajah Mada University and joined the Association of
Indonesia Scholars, only to be captured and presumably killed. At that time the
names of American graduated were high on Communist balcklist while those
supporting the Communist Party were high on the military’s hit list.
The
second incident that turned out to be a blessing in disguise was that his
tenure as Governor of the central bank was only five years and not extended. If
it had been extended, he might have been one of the three central bank
governors who felt the brunts of the 1997/1998 monetary crisis, two of them
werw dumped in jail.
Prof.
Mooy belives that this was God’s way of providing a double protection to keep
him away from danger. He built a harmonious and successful family, based on
culture and spiritual values handed down from his father and mother in Rote,
who taught him about the need to live a God-centered life and take good care of
all blessings from God.
He
advocates maximal development of talents, while trusting God to complete what
is beyond human reach. His motto is “Do your best and let God do the rest.” A
piece of exemplary advice from Prof. Mooy.
Though
now over 80 years old, Prof. Mooy is still actively involved in various
organizations, while sharing his life story. He realizes that the ‘luck’ and
success in his life have not derived from his own strength and abilty, but from
the grace of God, Who has been telling His story through the life of a person
named Adrianus Mooy. It is for this reason that he chose as the title of his
autobiography “ADRIANUS MOOY from the island of Rote – Telling HIS Story.”
