Off the
south-west of the eastern islands chain of Indonesia, exactly south of Flores
and south-east of Sumbawa, lies Sumba, one most fascinating and unique island
in the archipelago. As a part of East Nusa Tenggara Province. Sumba reveals a
face with two distinct halves. In contrast with the green tropical forest and
agricultural area of Westrn Sumba, the eastern one is covered most with
savannah down the rocky lime hills and amazing oases scattered everywhere.
This
eastern part of the island, is the main part of the East Sumba Regency. Besides
all its dryness and loneliness, East Sumba – with its capital Waingapu, the
largest town in and the main entry point to the island – lurks valueble
treasures, both economically and cultirally.
